Detailed Itinerary

Day One: Nairobi to Maasai Mara

Meals: Lunch, Dinner | Overnight: Maasai Mara Camp/Lodge

The adventure begins with an early morning departure from Nairobi, traveling through the scenic Great Rift Valley. Students will make a stopover at a designated viewpoint to learn about the geological formation of the Rift Valley, one of the world's most significant geological features stretching from the Middle East to Mozambique.

The journey continues through traditional Maasai lands, providing glimpses of pastoral life along the way. Upon arrival at the Maasai Mara, the group will check into their accommodation and enjoy lunch.

In the afternoon, students embark on their first game drive into the Maasai Mara National Reserve. This introductory safari allows them to spot various wildlife species including:

  • Zebras, wildebeests, and gazelles (herbivores)
  • Lions, cheetahs, and leopards (predators)
  • Elephants, giraffes, and buffalo
  • Numerous bird species

The game drive provides an opportunity to understand animal behavior, predator-prey relationships, and the importance of preserving natural habitats. After sunset, the group returns to the camp/lodge for dinner, followed by an evening orientation session and safety briefing about wildlife etiquette and conservation principles.

Day Two: Full-Day Game Drive & Maasai Cultural Experience

Meals: Breakfast, Picnic Lunch, Dinner | Overnight: Maasai Mara Camp/Lodge

After an early breakfast, students depart for a full-day game drive across the vast Maasai Mara ecosystem. The all-day safari allows for deeper exploration of different habitats including:

  • Open savanna grasslands
  • Acacia woodlands
  • River crossings and wetlands
  • Rocky outcrops (kopjes)

Students will learn about:

  • Ecosystem dynamics - How different species interact and depend on each other
  • Migration patterns - If visiting during July-October, witness the Great Wildebeest Migration
  • Animal adaptations - Survival strategies of different species
  • Conservation challenges - Threats to wildlife and ongoing protection efforts

A picnic lunch will be enjoyed at a designated site within the reserve, often near the Mara River, where students may observe hippos and crocodiles.

In the late afternoon, the group visits a traditional Maasai village (manyatta) for an authentic cultural experience. Students will:

  • Meet Maasai warriors and elders
  • Learn about Maasai customs, traditions, and social structure
  • Witness traditional jumping dances (adumu)
  • Explore traditional mud and dung houses
  • Understand the Maasai pastoral lifestyle
  • Discuss human-wildlife coexistence
  • Learn about Maasai beadwork and crafts

This cultural immersion helps students appreciate the importance of indigenous knowledge in wildlife conservation and the balance between traditional lifestyles and modern conservation needs. The day concludes with return to the accommodation for dinner and evening discussions about the day's experiences.

Day Three: Morning Game Drive & Return to Nairobi

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch | Overnight: N/A

The final day begins with an early morning game drive, often the best time for wildlife viewing as animals are most active during the cooler hours. Students have another opportunity to spot wildlife and may see:

  • Lions returning from night hunts
  • Leopards before they retreat to trees
  • Herbivores grazing in the morning light
  • Birds of prey starting their day

This morning drive reinforces lessons learned over the previous days and provides final opportunities for wildlife photography and observation.

After the game drive, the group returns to the camp/lodge for breakfast, checks out, and begins the journey back to Nairobi. The return trip includes another stop at the Great Rift Valley viewpoint for photographs and a final reflection on the trip's educational highlights.

Lunch is served en route, and the group arrives back in Nairobi in the late afternoon, carrying with them unforgettable memories and valuable lessons about:

  • Wildlife conservation importance
  • Ecological balance and biodiversity
  • Cultural heritage and coexistence
  • Environmental stewardship responsibilities
